Step 1

Create Restore Point:

The first and the foremost thing is to “Create a Restore Point” by going through the route, which resumes from: Start to All Programs to Accessories to System Tools finally System Restore.
  • If the User Access Control Window appears, click on “Continue”.
  • Use one of the following according to your operating system:
  1. If you are having Windows XP: Click on “Create a Restore Point” --> Next.
  2. And for Windows Vista: Click “Open System Protection”.
  3. Provide a description for the “Restore Point” and click “Create”.
  4. If Restore Point is created successfully, run the Registry Cleanup again.

Step 2

Alternate:

But if you cannot create the Restore Point, then increase free disk space and try to “Create a Restore Point”. Run Registry Cleanup after you create the restore point successfully.
You may also disable the Windows System Restore, backup the Windows Registry manually, and run the Registry cleanup.

Step 3

Turn off Windows System Restore:

  • Click the Start button.
  • Right-click on My Computer or Computer, and then click “Properties”.
  • Use one of the following according on your operating system:
  1. For Windows Vista users: In the left pane, click “System Protection”.
  2. When the User Account Control window appears, click “Continue”.
  3. And for Windows XP: On the System Restore tab, check “Turn off System Restore” or “Turn off System Restore” on all drives.

Step 4

Alternate:

However, if you do not see the System Restore tab, that means you are not logged on to Windows as an Administrator. And for that go to line 5.
Under Automatic Restore Points, uncheck each drive and click “Turn System Restore off”.
  • Click “Apply”.
  • When you see the confirmation message, click “Yes”.
  • Click “OK”.

Step 5

Backup the Windows Registry:

Use one of the following according to your operating system:
  • Users of Windows Vista can: Click the Start button, and then click “All Programs” --> Accessories --> Run.
  • And for Windows XP: Click Start --> Run.
  • In the Run dialog box, type the following text: “regedit”, and then Click “OK”.
  • If the User Account Control window appears, click “Continue”.
  • On the File menu, click “Export”.
  • In the File name box, type a name that you will remember, for example: Registry Backup.
  • Select a location where you want to save the Registration Entries (.reg) file.
  • Click “Save”.

Note: Save the backup file for a couple of week, unless and until you are sure that the changes that are being made by you have not caused any problems.

Step 6

Run Registry Cleanup:

  • Start Norton 360.
  • Click “Tasks”.
  • Click “Run Scans”.   
  • Click “Let Me Choose”, and then click” Go”.
  • Under Scans, make sure that only Registry Cleanup is checked.
  • Click “Go”.
  • When the registry cleanup completes, click “Close”.
